1500 Year Old Cave Bean
Pole. 120 days. Dry/shelling bean. A most unique bean! These seeds are said to have been originally discovered in a cave in New Mexico sealed with pitch in a clay urn. Carbon dating revealed the beans to be about 1500 years old. Out of curiosity, the seeds were planted and some actually germinated! A very long maturing bean, but if your garden and growing season allows, you will be rewarded with the most massive bean harvest you can imagine. Plants grow tenaciously up a trellis and can reach a length of nearly 20 ft. An absolute behemoth that produces until frost! Dry beans are large and kidney shaped and have a maroon-brown and white mottled appearance. This variety cooks down to a creamy texture that is perfect for soups. My favorite. Pick often to ensure productivity. Plant outside after all danger of frost has passed. Soaking beans/peas in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting helps them germinate much more reliably. 25-30 seeds per pack
